The Recovery Boiler Project Cargo
from Spain to Mexico

For several years the Smart Logistics Group has worked with the paper industry providing regular container transport services (LCL and FCL).

This time the Smart Logistics Group was asked to transport a project cargo: a recovery boiler weighing 137 tons from Spain to Mexico. Recovery Boiler is the part of Kraft process of pulping where chemicals for white liquor are recovered and reformed from black liquor, which contains lignin from previously processed wood. The black liquor is burned, generating heat, which is usually used in the process or in making electricity, much as in a conventional steam power plant.

The cargo was collected in Madrid and Toledo,Spain, where it was transported by road to the Port of Bilbao.

The total weight of the cargo was 137 tons and consisted of five Break Bulk pieces and two 40ft Open Top SOC containers

LOADING TO VESSEL

Bilbao Port – Quay Side

Special Heavy Lift Equipment

Some of the break bulk cargo pieces weighed in at more than 46 tons each and these required a special heavy lift crane to load the cargo to the vessel. The cargo was loaded to the AMAZONEBORG, a multipurpose vessel.

Lashing and Securing

Once loaded in the vessel, the cargo was secured using heavy duty ratchet straps, steel chains and wooden/steel wedges in order to keep all the pieces fixed and secured during its transatlantic transport to the Port of Altamira in Mexico.

Altamira – Nuevo León Monterrey

Once at the Port of Altamira, Mexico, the Break Bulk cargo was unloaded using heavy lift crane and then was loaded and secured to low loader trailers for further transport by road to Monterrey Nuevo León, Mexico (742 miles north of Altamira).

Using this method and schedule, we successfully delivered the recovery boiler to the customer in time and within the budget they had.
